Are There Different Types of Drywall?
Always assumed that drywall was a material that could be used anywhere? If so, then you need to read the following to learn more.
Regular drywall is generally white on one side and brown on the other. This is considered the most economic sheetrock and comes in various sizes that range in thickness from 3/8 inches to 1 inch. It usually comes in 4 x 8-foot panels.
Green board sheetrock, which is known as moisture-resistant drywall, comes with a green covering which makes it more resistant to moisture than standard sheetrock. It is, however, more expensive, and is not waterproof, so do not use it when it will be coming into contact with water. It is often used as a tile backer in limited wet areas like bathrooms and basement walls, in addition to kitchens, utility and laundry rooms.
Blue board which is also known as plaster baseboard, is used for veneer plastering, and the surface has special absorption qualities. It has high water and mold resistance qualities, and there are fewer steps involved in veneer plastering. Blue board is not made to use with mud, tape, or paint. However, it does work extremely well in bathrooms or places that have a lot of moisture content, and will also help to reduce noise.
Paperless sheetrock has slowly been replacing paper sheetrock, and is covered in fiberglass and not paper, this protects the gypsum board against rot and offers even more resistance to the likes of mold and mildew. The quality of the board is tougher than regular sheetrock, and some construction professionals find it easier to cut. Paperless drywall has a slight texture which will need the application of joint compound in order to achieve a smoother and cleaner finish.
